King’s Day
King’s or Queen’s Day, a national holiday in the Netherlands a, celebrates the birthday of the King or Queen of the Netherlands. King’s or Queen’s Day is known for it’s flea markets all over the country, where everybody is allowed to sell things in the streets. In Rotterdam artist and bands will perform live on stages throughout the city and there are shows and activities for all ages. Weather you are going to relax on a terrace at Rotown, dance on Stadhuislein or celebrate in one of the neighborhoods, the color orange will be everywhere.
Stamppot
Serves 4
Ingredients:
- 3 pounds of potatoes peeled and cut in 4
- 2 packages of kale washed and sliced( discard the stems)
- 2 small shallots diced
- 2 bay leaves
- Salt and pepper
- 1 cup warm whole milk
- 3 tablespoons butter
- ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
- 3 pounds of rootwurst or smoked sausage
- 4 rashers of cooked bacon crumbled
- Any brown gravy
Method:
In a large saucepan saute shallots until soft add kale, bay leaves, salt and pepper cook on medium for 10 minutes then add potatoes cover with water and keep on a low boil until potatoes are done. While vegetables are cooking, in a oven ready pan bake sausages at 325 until done set aside and keep warm. When vegetables are done strain very well and remove bay leaves, place back in pot and add butter, milk, nutmeg , salt and pepper then mash with a potato masher, serve on a platter with ( fried or baked ) sausage on top. Have some grainy mustard and the last 2 items on top yum !
